Sarah takes inspiration from the events of her life and the lives of those around her. Recent influences include Anselm Kiefer, Justin Mortimer and Sophie Calle. She has a fascination with the use of text in Art, kindled by the work of Douglas Gordon, and a desire to communicate through her work with the openness and honesty of Tracey Emin. Growing up in Sussex in the 90s, Sarah's early ideas about Art were formed in the context of the height of the YBA Movement, which has remained a primary influence in her own practice. It is a central part of her work, though this may not be evident in the final pieces. Photography is used both in its purest form and as a method of visually recording and exploring her subjects. The majority of her practice is concept driven, with materials being selected as appropriate to the subject matter, however she also enjoys the challenge of reversing this and creating materials led pieces. She uses a variety of media to explore how people live, their relationships and how they respond to and affect the world around them on an individual level and as a society. Sarah JM Jarvis's art is primarily concerned with identity and the human condition.
